NBC has signed a development deal with Dolly Parton. Under the pact, the network is planning a series of TV movies with Parton based on her “songs, stories and inspiring life.” The movies will be stand-alone. They will contain music but won’t be “musicals,” with Parton possibly appearing in them.
Parton is a singer, actress and a songwriter. Country songs often tell stories that coould land themselves to adaptations — for instance, Fox is developing a limited series based on the Carrie Underwood song Two Black Cadillacs. Like Underwood, who brought huge ratings for NBC’s Sound of Music live musical, Parton has a big, loyal fan base that NBC no doubt would like to tap into.
