The black box holds vital data and can reveal what happened in the event of an aircraft disaster – but what’s inside it?

In this video an expert dismantles the box – which is actually orange – and describes the components.

They contain data from the cockpit including a voice recorder which can help air crash investigator piece together the plane’s final moments.

Boxes are designed to survive huge impact, crushing, heat and immersion in water and are kept in the tail as most collisions are nose-first.
