Alexandria, LA: Attempted traffic stop leads to wild chase in Alexandria

What started as a traffic stop for a seat belt violation turned into a high-speed chase that included the suspect throwing items from the car, a near accident and a deputy getting hit by the suspect’s vehicle, according to a Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office release.

It started on Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. when deputies tried to stop a vehicle in the Overton and Harvard streets area because the driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Instead of stopping the driver – identified as Keldric Demond Cheney, 28, of 3815 Spencer St. in Alexandria, saw the patrol car and sped off at high speed, according to the release.

As he was driving, Cheney threw a bag of suspected marijuana out of his car, and it landed on the patrol car’s windshield, according to the release. Another bag was thrown out of the car as it rounded a corner. Also, Cheney threw a liquid out of the car that also landed on the patrol car’s windshield.
