Henderson, LA: Deadly 18-wheeler crash and fire closes I-10

Finally, I-10 opens again between Baton Rouge and Lafayette

HENDERSON, LA (WAFB) –

The Louisiana State Police reported an 18-wheeler crash and fire shut down a significant portion of I-10 West between Baton Rouge and Lafayette.

It happened on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge around 8:30 p.m.

Troopers sent out an alert a little before 9 p.m. advising drivers to avoid I-10 in Henderson.

They initially said the interstate was closed in both directions.

About an hour later, another alert indicated I-10 West was still blocked.

Westbound traffic from Baton Rouge is being detoured onto LA 415 in Port Allen to US 190 West.

Drivers can take US 190 to Opelousas and then I-49 South to Lafayette.

It is unknown when I-10 will be reopened.

According to KLFY-TV in Lafayette, two big rigs collided, causing one of them to burst into flames.

The station reported the driver of the tractor trailer that caught fire was pronounced dead.

His name was not released.
