Judge denies bond for man accused of shooting pregnant wife

A Baton Rouge district judge refused to set a bond for a man accused of shooting his pregnant estranged wife several times.

Judge Don Johnson denied bond for Frank Atkins Monday morning.

The 26-year-old is accused of shooting Kayla Atkins, 23. She is four months pregnant.

A mother says her daughter tried to get away from an abusive man, only now to find herself in ICU, paralyzed and fighting to stay alive.

Roslyn Crump has two vehicles parked in her backyard. Her daughter almost died in both of them just days apart.

Kayla Atkins is fighting for her life and at the moment, paralyzed and four months pregnant. Actually blessed, believe it or not, considering how many times she was shot and what she had been through before that.

“I told her, Kayla I don’t sleep. We have to do something about this. I don’t sleep, I don’t rest well. I worry about you all day and all night, we have to do something. And finally Kayla made it up in her mind to get away and look what happened to her,” said Crump.

Police arrest Frank Atkins – arrested before, charges dropped

Frank Atkins was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly shooting his estranged pregnant wife, Kayla Atkins. But one woman tells 9 News, Atkins should have been serving a murder charge and never have been out.

Atkins was arrested in 2011 for a murder charge, a charge that was later dropped.

Bernard Lands’ niece said her uncle was shot and killed last year.

“In July of 2011, Lands, 51, who lived at this home behind me, was shot to death on his porch by a person that we believe to be Frank Atkins,” said John Dauthier, lead homicide detective on the case.

The sole piece of evidence prosecutors say link Atkins as the killer? A very credible witness statement.

“He had a 2nd degree murder charge in 2011, and we had one cooperating witness, and unfortunately that witness died not related to him or his case,” said East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore.

Frank Atkins being escorted to EBR Parish Prison

The man accused of shooting his pregnant wifeseveral times in Baton Rouge Tuesday is now behind bars.

Frank Atkins was arrested by U.S. Marshals Wednesday around 1 p.m. at an apartment complex on North Ardenwood. Police were able to locate Atkins because of a tip from someone in the community.

His estranged wife, Kayla Atkins, was shot in the neck and back while she was sitting in a car on Bay Street.

The shooting happened on Bay Street just after 12:30 p.m., but Kayla Atkins, 23, was able to get away and she drove a couple of blocks to a parking lot on Choctaw Road near Scenic Hwy. where emergency officials found her.

Rosalyn Crump, the mother of the shooting victim, says her daughter is four months pregnant and is currently in ICU. Crump tells WAFB Frank Atkins to kill her daughter Sunday by beating and trying to strangle her. The suspect was arrested for that incident and got out of jail Monday.
