Felix Vail arrested in Texas in wife’s 1962 drowning

Written by
Jerry Mitchell

CANYON LAKE, TEXAS — Authorities charged Mississippi native Felix Vail on Friday with murder in the 1962 drowning of his wife — the oldest prosecution of a serial killer suspect in U.S. history.

The Clarion-Ledger, following a months-long investigation, detailed in an eight-page special report the peculiar circumstances surrounding the drowning of Mary Horton Vail and the fate of other women who crossed Vail’s path. The Nov. 11 report, titled “Gone,” prompted authorities to reopen the investigation.

Vail, 73, was the last known person to see three women alive — Mary Vail; his longtime girlfriend Sharon Hensley, who disappeared in 1973; and his wife, Annette Craver Vail, who disappeared in 1984.

[...]

“He’s getting what he deserves,” Horton said. “Over the years, the freak fortune of fate has benefitted him. It’s just a shame a cover-up came when my sister died, but justice is on the right path.”

At the time of his wife’s drowning, Felix Vail told authorities she had accidentally fallen into the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles after he steered to avoid a stump.
He told them he was laying trotlines.

Authorities jailed Vail for questioning, but he was released a few days later.

In January 1963, Calcasieu Parish grand jurors heard evidence against Vail, but then-District Attorney Frank Salter didn’t let them consider a murder indictment.

Salter’s father, Felix Vail and a number of Vail relatives and friends all worked for Cities Service Co., later known as CITGO.

After analyzing the autopsy of the Oct. 28, 1962, drowning death of Mary Horton Vail, renowned New York pathologist Dr. Michael Baden told The Clarion-Ledger he believes foul play took place.

Kenneth Vandever’s killer, Richard Cobb put to death for Texas store abduction slaying

By MICHAEL GRACZYK, Associated Press
Updated 8:44 pm, Thursday, April 25, 2013

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) —

[...]

But that wasn’t it.

Just before the lethal drug took effect and at the conclusion of his statement, Cobb twisted his head back, raised it off a pillow placed on the gurney and then toward the warden standing behind him.

“Wow!” the inmate exclaimed in a loud voice. “That is great. That is awesome! Thank you, warden! Thank you (expletive) warden!”

His head fell back on the pillow, and his neck twisted at an odd angle, with his mouth and eyes open.

He remained that way for some 15 minutes before a physician entered the death chamber to examine him and pronounce him dead at 6:27 p.m. CDT. Sixteen minutes had passed since the drug had been injected.

The father, stepmother and stepbrother of the man shot and killed by Cobb were among the witnesses. Also in the viewing area was one of the women who was shot and attacked but survived to testify against Cobb.

“I think justice was served but it doesn’t change anything to speak of,” the slain man’s father, Don Vandever, said after watching Cobb die. “I do think the justice system needs to be more of a deterrent.

“All he did was go to sleep. That’s it.”

Beaumont, TX: Livestock Deputy Cringed: 3 Horses Neglected, 1 Put Down

BEAUMONT – by Ashley Gaston – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case of neglected horses that makes even seasoned deputies cringe.

Horses left in filthy conditions for several months without food, hay or water.

Today they had to put down one of three horses because pain medicine was the only way to help the animal with a hoof that had broken in half because of neglect.

Deputy Don Metts says this is one sign of a horse someone has neglected… fungus on the skin that’s causing the hair to fall off.

“It makes me sick to my stomach because it’s so easy to keep a horse in good shape,” said Deputy Metts.

Texas & Louisiana sue federal government in fishing fight

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) – Texas and Louisiana have sued to block federal fishery officials from regulating the length of the red snapper recreational fishing season in federal waters off their coasts.

According to a federal rule instituted in March, there has been a quota to control the amount of the fish taken from the Gulf of Mexico each year. But federal officials maintain it has been consistently exceeded, because states such as Texas run a longer season in their own waters. Once the quota is reached in combined state and federal waters, regulators end the season in federal areas.

What BP Doesn’t Want You to Know About the 2010 Gulf Spill

Mark Hertsgaard

Apr 22, 2013 4:45 AM EDT

THE 2010 GULF OF MEXICO OIL SPILL WAS EVEN WORSE THAN BP WANTED US TO KNOW.

“It’s as safe as Dawn dishwashing liquid.” That’s what Jamie Griffin says the BP man told her about the smelly, rainbow-streaked gunk coating the floor of the “floating hotel” where Griffin was feeding hundreds of cleanup workers during the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently, the workers were tracking the gunk inside on their boots. Griffin, as chief cook and maid, was trying to clean it. But even boiling water didn’t work.

“The BP representative said, ‘Jamie, just mop it like you’d mop any other dirty floor,’” Griffin recalls in her Louisiana drawl.

It was the opening weeks of what everyone, echoing President Barack Obama, was calling “the worst environmental disaster in American history.” At 9:45 p.m. local time on April 20, 2010, a fiery explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig had killed 11 workers and injured 17. One mile underwater, the Macondo well had blown apart, unleashing a gusher of oil into the gulf. At risk were fishing areas that supplied one third of the seafood consumed in the U.S., beaches from Texas to Florida that drew billions of dollars’ worth of tourism to local economies, and Obama’s chances of reelection. Republicans were blaming him for mishandling the disaster, his poll numbers were falling, even his 11-year-old daughter was demanding, “Daddy, did you plug the hole yet?”

Griffin did as she was told: “I tried Pine-Sol, bleach, I even tried Dawn on those floors.” As she scrubbed, the mix of cleanser and gunk occasionally splashed onto her arms and face.

Within days, the 32-year-old single mother was coughing up blood and suffering constant headaches. She lost her voice. “My throat felt like I’d swallowed razor blades,” she says.

Vitter, Cassidy file bills to extend offshore boundaries of Louisiana, other coastal states

Todd Masson

Sen. David Vitter and Rep. Bill Cassidy have introduced companion bills in their respective houses that would grant Louisiana and several other Gulf and Atlantic states control over a greater area of offshore waters.

The Offshore Fairness Act would extend the offshore jurisdiction of states from Louisiana to Virginia to more than 10 miles. Along the Gulf Coast, Texas and the west coast of Florida enjoy state boundaries that extend nine miles into the sea, while Louisiana’s, Mississippi’s and Alabama’s control stops at three miles off their coasts.

“My bill is a simple matter of fairness for coastal states like Louisiana,” Vitter said. “The bill doesn’t only grant states’ rights to energy resources with additional property rights, it also gives them exclusive fishery management authority over reef fish within the new boundary.”

As many as 14 injured in stabbing in Lone Star College Cy-Fair stabbing

HOUSTON — Emergency crews are tending to multiple victims of a stabbing attack on the Lone Star College Cy-Fair campus in Texas.

The violence broke out at about 11:30am on the Cy-Fair campus on Barker Cypress Road. According to the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department, there are multiple victims, possibly as many as 14. At least one person is said to be critically injured. Life Flight was called to the scene, as were a number of ambulances.

Cy-Fair VFD says four patients have been taken by Life Flight to Hermann Texas Medical Center. Two more patients were taken by ground ambulance to Hermann Hospital. The remainder were taken to North Cypress Hospital, and two people refused treatment at the scene.

James, a student at the school, told Eyewitness News’s sister station KTRK, he helped police take one person into custody. He says the suspect, who appeared to be a student, may be hearing impaired, and was armed with a knife similar to an exacto knife, that may be used in animal dissections.

James says he saw the suspect, dressed in black, emerge from the building at a run, and he gave chase. When tackled, the suspect reportedly said, ‘I give up, I give up.’ James adds that he saw several people bleeding, including some victims with neck wounds. They were tended to by medical crews.
