Houma-Terrebonne Airport low Super Bowl traffic draws questions, concerns

The Houma-Terrebonne Airport got some extra business over the Super Bowl weekend, but some people question whether airport personnel did enough to promote it.

David Slayter, executive director of the Airport Commission, last week predicted 35 to 50 aircraft coming in for Super Bowl weekend.

But there were only 21 aircraft, Slater said this week.

The airport is one of the closest outside the temporary flight restriction area that was enforced around the Superdome Sunday. It also has a control tower and runway big enough to land a 737.

Slayter said his initial estimate came about because of reservations the airport received earlier last week, but more canceled than he expected, which isn’t unusual.

What typically happens is people will make reservations at a number of airports in advance and take their first choice, Slayter said.

Still, Slayter said the count is significantly more than what the airport normally gets, just “not as many as what we were expecting.”

Maybe, just maybe, fewer people flew overall because they don’t want to be treated like terrorists at the airport.  Maybe more people drove this year because they don’t want to be subjected to possible x-rays,  strip-searches, poking, prodding,  luggage searches,  and detainment just to go see a football game.

But what do I know?  I’m just an average guy with a blog who hasn’t flown in decades.

Feds Seize $13.6 Million Worth of Phony Super Bowl Merchandise

Investigators have confiscated more than $13.6 million worth of phony sports merchandise over the past five months and expect to seize more in New Orleans during Super Bowl week, a federal law-enforcement official said Thursday.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton said authorities also have shut down more than 300 websites selling counterfeit goods as part of an enforcement effort dubbed “Operation Red Zone.”

The operation targeted international shipments of jerseys, hats and other souvenirs entering the U.S. for sale by stores, flea markets and street vendors.

Feds say they rescued 5 women from sex trafficking ring in Quarter

Federal authorities say they uncovered a sex trafficking ring in the French Quarter in recent days, rescuing five women and arresting eight men.

The women were forced to come here to work as prostitutes for pimps, authorities said.

Agents with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been heavily targeting human trafficking and counterfeit goods with the influx of tourists here for this weekend’s Super Bowl.

None of the men arrested for trafficking were area residents. Their identities were not immediately released.

Eight arrested and five rescued in NOLA human tracking bust

“These are not willing participants, these are victims of human sexual trafficking,” Cox said. “These people are forced into this activity and we treat them as victims.”

The New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Hornets, with the Archdiocese of New Orleans, enlisted the help of New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson and his wife Gayle, and others to record a public service announcement to help raise awareness of human trafficking. In it, Archbishop Gregory Aymond referred to it as “modern day slavery” and “a powerful evil.”

Saints owner Tom Benson said in the spot that “a major event, such as the upcoming Super Bowl can drastically increase this tragedy.”

The public service announcement urges victims or those with knowledge of human trafficking crimes to call (888) 373-7888.

Drunk 49ers Fan Interupts Super Bowl Reporter Jessica Sanchez , Sanchez Gets Revenge

A young reporter sent to New Orleans to cover the build-up to Sunday’s NFL Super Bowl shocked viewers of Orlando’s Local 6 News when she asked a woman how long she had been suffering from a sexual transmitted disease during a live television interview.

Usually Jessica Sanchez is traffic anchor for the station, but this week she is in New Orleans reporting on the buildup to Sunday’s big game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens.

However after her snarky segment broadcast live at 6.15 the other morning, she may be back doing the traffic report sooner than she had hoped.
