Woman gunned down in front of Algiers church just before 30th birthday

Monica Hernandez / Eyewitness News

NEW ORLEANS – Outside a small church in Algiers, a cross marks the spot where Kendrell “Cat” Glover was gunned down Friday night.

Saturday, the pastor prayed with a grieving mother at the nearby home she shared with her daughter.

“Now I got to go put her to rest,” cried Cynthia Glover. “I lay my kid to rest.”

Kendrell Glover would have turned 30 on Sunday.

Family members say Glover was walking home from a friend’s house when two men in a black Nissan Titan pulled up. One man got out and shot Glover, who fell to the ground. But that wasn’t the end of it.

Glover’s mother said the gunman stood over her daughter, ultimately firing eight shots. Cynthia Glover heard every single one.

“He showed my child no mercy. None,” said Glover. “She walked out of that door, and in less than 20 minutes my child was dead. My kid was dead.”

This is the second time Cynthia Glover will bury one of her children. Her son was murdered 16 years ago. And in the close knit community, the pastor of Greater Cypress Grove Missionary Baptist Church says the violence has to stop.

Family members say the black Nissan Titan had a Saints sticker on the back. If you have any information, call police or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

Akein Scott’s brother and 4 others in custody for Mother’s Day shootings

POSTED BY

Returning to the intersection of Frenchmen and North Villere streets, city officials and law enforcement announced the capture of second line shooting suspect Akein Scott as well as his brother, 24-year-old Shawn Scott, and four others.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Ronal[d] Serpas confirmed Shawn Scott as the second shooting suspect. In 2007, Scott pleaded guilty in possession of cocaine and heroin and was sentenced to five years probation. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin and was to serve an eight year sentence. He was out on parole until December 2015. Like his brother Akein, Scott was charged this morning with 20 counts of second degree attempted murder. (A person was trampled by the crowd following the shooting and has been identified among the victims, hence the 20 counts of attempted second degree murder.)

“Shawn has a lengthy record and has demonstrated his contempt for New Orleans,” Serpas said.

Serpas also announced Justin Alexander, 19, Brandy George, 28, Bionca Hickerson, 22, and Nekia Youngblood, 32, allegedly helped hide Akein Scott. They all have been charged with accessory after the fact to attempted second degree murder and obstruction of justice for harboring a fugitive.

“Harboring known criminals is a serious offense,” Landrieu said. “These individuals will pay a price. They will pay because the people of this city have said enough is enough and we will not tolerate it.”

Pair arrested in New Orleans for alleged sex trafficking of underage girls

Written by: FOX8Live.com Staff

New Orleans, La. - The NOPD arrests a convicted murderer and another woman on charges of trafficking children for sex.  David Lee and Brandy Piland-Deluca are in Orleans Parish Prison this morning, accused of bringing two teenage girls to New Orleans and forcing them into prostitution.

According to state police, who helped in this investigation, the teenage girls were runaways who somehow came into contact with Lee in Texas in 2010. The girls were only 14 and 16 years old.

State police say Lee drove the girls here to New Orleans, forcing them to prostitute. Lee allegedly took pictures of the girls and posted them to a website called backpage.com, advertising them for prostitution.

He essentially worked as their pimp, taking all of their money, and prohibiting them from returning home.

After a short time, New Orleans police found the girls in a motel on Camp Street, and returned them to their families.

TP loses top staffers to Advocate

Jay Vise Reporting

Days after New Orleans billionaire John Georges finalized his purchase the Baton Rouge Advocate, the Advocate announced the hiring of several longtime Times-Picayune staffers.

The “poaching” of the TP staffers is another sign of Georges’ intention to further develop the New Orleans version of the Advocate as a daily paper.

The Advocate’s website says the four TP staffers hired away are:

-    Martha Carr, a 16-year veteran of the Picayune.  Carr will be Managing Editor of the New Orleans Advocate.
-    Gordan Russell, a 14-year veteran of the Picayune, described as the TP’s “leading investigative reporter.”
-    Sara Pagones, who will become the New Orleans Advocate’s St. Tammany Bureau Chief.

According to the Advocate, Carr, Russel, and Pagones were “part of a team that received two Pulitzer Prizes for its work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.” The paper also announced the hiring of TP staffers Claire Galofaro and Andrew Vanacore, who have collectively covered several major stories in the Metro area and Southeast Louisiana.
