Akein Scott’s brother and 4 others in custody for Mother’s Day shootings

POSTED BY

Returning to the intersection of Frenchmen and North Villere streets, city officials and law enforcement announced the capture of second line shooting suspect Akein Scott as well as his brother, 24-year-old Shawn Scott, and four others.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Ronal[d] Serpas confirmed Shawn Scott as the second shooting suspect. In 2007, Scott pleaded guilty in possession of cocaine and heroin and was sentenced to five years probation. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin and was to serve an eight year sentence. He was out on parole until December 2015. Like his brother Akein, Scott was charged this morning with 20 counts of second degree attempted murder. (A person was trampled by the crowd following the shooting and has been identified among the victims, hence the 20 counts of attempted second degree murder.)

“Shawn has a lengthy record and has demonstrated his contempt for New Orleans,” Serpas said.

Serpas also announced Justin Alexander, 19, Brandy George, 28, Bionca Hickerson, 22, and Nekia Youngblood, 32, allegedly helped hide Akein Scott. They all have been charged with accessory after the fact to attempted second degree murder and obstruction of justice for harboring a fugitive.

“Harboring known criminals is a serious offense,” Landrieu said. “These individuals will pay a price. They will pay because the people of this city have said enough is enough and we will not tolerate it.”

SWLA Tea Party blasts IRS

By Theresa Schmidt

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The Southwest Louisiana Tea Party movement began picking up steam in 2009 as members from throughout the five-parish area began gathering for rallies and becoming more visible and involved in local government and the political scene.

President Jonathan Duhon said he got involved because it seemed that too many ordinary people had become disengaged from participating in our democracy.

“We really didn’t know that much about our government anymore. We didn’t know about it on the local level; we didn’t know about it on the state level or on the federal level,” said Duhon.

Last year, the group applied to IRS for a type of tax exempt status allowed for non profits.  Duhon is convinced they received extra scrutiny because they are a Tea Party group.

“Having to wait seven months for an answer from the IRS as to whether or not we’d get the status, I mean, that’s way beyond what it normally takes. And then our next correspondence with the IRS wasn’t yes or no, it was supply more information,” said Duhon.

Felix Vail arrested in Texas in wife’s 1962 drowning

Written by
Jerry Mitchell

CANYON LAKE, TEXAS — Authorities charged Mississippi native Felix Vail on Friday with murder in the 1962 drowning of his wife — the oldest prosecution of a serial killer suspect in U.S. history.

The Clarion-Ledger, following a months-long investigation, detailed in an eight-page special report the peculiar circumstances surrounding the drowning of Mary Horton Vail and the fate of other women who crossed Vail’s path. The Nov. 11 report, titled “Gone,” prompted authorities to reopen the investigation.

Vail, 73, was the last known person to see three women alive — Mary Vail; his longtime girlfriend Sharon Hensley, who disappeared in 1973; and his wife, Annette Craver Vail, who disappeared in 1984.

[...]

“He’s getting what he deserves,” Horton said. “Over the years, the freak fortune of fate has benefitted him. It’s just a shame a cover-up came when my sister died, but justice is on the right path.”

At the time of his wife’s drowning, Felix Vail told authorities she had accidentally fallen into the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles after he steered to avoid a stump.
He told them he was laying trotlines.

Authorities jailed Vail for questioning, but he was released a few days later.

In January 1963, Calcasieu Parish grand jurors heard evidence against Vail, but then-District Attorney Frank Salter didn’t let them consider a murder indictment.

Salter’s father, Felix Vail and a number of Vail relatives and friends all worked for Cities Service Co., later known as CITGO.

After analyzing the autopsy of the Oct. 28, 1962, drowning death of Mary Horton Vail, renowned New York pathologist Dr. Michael Baden told The Clarion-Ledger he believes foul play took place.

LA Senate–Elio Motors celebrates a victory…

Updated: May 14, 2013

Exciting news today for the automaker, as both chambers of the state legislature voted to exempt drivers of the concept car from wearing helmets.

Lawmakers classified the three-wheeled vehicle as an autocycle not a motorcycle.

By law to drive one in the state of Louisiana you needed to wear a helmet — now it’s still seen as a motorcycle technically but the classification as an autocycle brings changes which reenforces that an Elio can be viewed as any other car on the road.

State removes student information from database

Written by
Barbara Leader

Louisiana’s student information has been withdrawn from a non-profit database after parents voiced privacy concerns, but a company spokesman said reinstating the information would be a “painless process” and “as simple as uploading data.”

Adam Gaber, spokesman for inBloom Inc., confirmed that Louisiana removed student data from the warehouse in April. That space remains available for Louisiana’s use.

“Louisiana has a software as a service (SAAS) contract with inBloom,” an emailed answer to The News-Star’s question regarding Louisiana’s current status with inBloom. “We are continuing discussions with Louisiana to determine how we move forward together.”

Board of Elementary and Secondary Education member Lottie Beebe said the ease of reinstatement concerns her because she said the initial upload was done without BESE’s approval.

FBI may step in to help BRPD with gas station investigation

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The FBI could step in to help Baton Rouge Police with an alleged fight at a gas station with three black suspects and a white family.

It’s a story that’s grabbed national attention with cries for justice on social networks.

The face of the 41-year-old victim from Sunday night’s argument shows a broken nose, a broken eye socket and cuts to the face. It happened at the Chevron Gas Station on Scenic Highway off Plank Road.

The family does not want their names or identity released just yet, but he did tell WAFB’s Kiran Chawla on the phone what happened Sunday around 9:30 p.m. The family of four was heading home, they needed gas so they stopped.

The man said me the credit card reader did not work at the pump, so he went up to the window to pay. That’s when he said three black suspects, two men and a woman came up to him.

He claimed Donald Dickerson, 41, cut in front of him in line and said “You’re in the wrong neighborhood.”

The victim responded, “All I’m trying to do is get some gas.” He said that’s when Dickerson told him “he was not going to make it out.”

[...]

In the meantime, police are asking for the public to bear with them.

“All we would ask is people be patient and that people don’t rush to judgement. We have to deal with facts, not emotions with these sort of investigations,” said Lt. Kelly.
