BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The FBI could step in to help Baton Rouge Police with an alleged fight at a gas station with three black suspects and a white family.

It’s a story that’s grabbed national attention with cries for justice on social networks.

The face of the 41-year-old victim from Sunday night’s argument shows a broken nose, a broken eye socket and cuts to the face. It happened at the Chevron Gas Station on Scenic Highway off Plank Road.

The family does not want their names or identity released just yet, but he did tell WAFB’s Kiran Chawla on the phone what happened Sunday around 9:30 p.m. The family of four was heading home, they needed gas so they stopped.

The man said me the credit card reader did not work at the pump, so he went up to the window to pay. That’s when he said three black suspects, two men and a woman came up to him.

He claimed Donald Dickerson, 41, cut in front of him in line and said “You’re in the wrong neighborhood.”

The victim responded, “All I’m trying to do is get some gas.” He said that’s when Dickerson told him “he was not going to make it out.”

[...]

In the meantime, police are asking for the public to bear with them.

“All we would ask is people be patient and that people don’t rush to judgement. We have to deal with facts, not emotions with these sort of investigations,” said Lt. Kelly.

Impending disaster uncovered at Louisiana refinery

march 8 2013

BATON ROUGE, La. – A surprise Environmental Protection Agency inspection in the middle of 2012 uncovered numerous air quality and job safety and health violations that ExxonMobil did not report at the nation’s second largest oil refinery here. Unfortunately, say the Steelworkers – whose union includes tens of thousands of refinery workers – such hidden violations are common.

The EPA’s full inspection report, posted this week on the website of the Bucket Brigade, a non-profit group that monitors and critiques safety and air quality practices by Louisiana’s dominant oil industry, includes a release of carbon monoxide – the poisonous gas of auto exhaust – into the atmosphere that sent nine people to the hospital.

ExxonMobil didn’t even report that May 7, 2009, accident to EPA within six months, as federal rules require, the agency says. The firm claimed the refinery was “clean” for the last five years, but the EPA found eight other accidents besides that one.

Federal rules “require the (refinery) owner or operator shall include in the 5-year accident history all accidental releases from a covered process that resulted in deaths, injuries, or significant property damage on site, or known offsite deaths, injuries, evacuations, sheltering in place, property damage or an environmental damage,” EPA’s report says. The 48-page report contains a litany of other problems at Baton Rouge.

That’s unacceptable, say the Steelworkers. It’s also common in the industry. A Steelworkers safety rep, acting on behalf of the refinery’s workers – as allowed by law – accompanied the EPA team to the ExxonMobil plant. USW represents its workers.

And the union adds the fine EPA slapped on ExxonMobil won’t solve the industry-wide safety problems.

Addis, LA: WBR Deputy: “My home was illegally searched by Brusly Police Officer”

ADDIS- A West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputy claims a Brusly Police Officer illegally searched her house recently.

It happened last July as the Officer was conducting a residency check for the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board. Turns out, the Brusly Police Officer did not have a parish commission when he executed the search on the home on Elizabeth Lane in Addis.

“It’s insane,” Deputy Donna LeBlanc said. “How far are you willing to go to violate people’s rights?”

The search was part of a residency check for the West Baton Rouge Parish School System. The system has reported problems in the past with zone jumpers, people who list a certain address but actually live somewhere else and go to a school in the district with the listed address.

LeBlanc said when the Officer showed up at her house to search it, she was not at home. Her 16-year-old daughter allowed the Officer into her house after presenting her with a letter saying if she didn’t comply, she would be dropped from Brusly High School.

“As far as my two minor children being at home, he should have never entered my house,” LeBlanc said. “He should have never even spoke to them without me being present.”

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich and a California attorney hired by 25 Assumption Parish residents evacuated due to a giant sinkhole near Bayou Corne are heading to Pierre Part on Saturday to talk to other residents about their legal options, the attorney said Monday.

Thomas V. Girardi, a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles, said he and Brockovich will attend Saturday’s community meeting at the American Legion Hall, 3336 La. 70, Pierre Part, to answer questions about the Texas Brine sinkhole in northern Assumption Parish.

Brockovich was portrayed by actress Julia Roberts in the 2000 feature film “Erin Brockovich” shot by former Baton Rouge resident and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. It tells the story of then-legal clerk Brockovich’s fight against a California power plant in the exposure of nearby residents to contaminated ground water.

Girardi was one of the attorneys who worked with Brockovich and secured a $333 million settlement for 650 residents of Hinkley, Calif

Baton Rouge, LA: Pop-A-Lock scam suspect arrested

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A Baton Rouge man accused of scamming people out of money in a “Pop-A-Lock” scam has been arrested.

There have been numerous reports across Baton Rouge in the past year of people approaching others and asking for money to help pay “Pop-A-Lock” to get the keys out of their vehicle. In most, if not all, of the cases, the people asking for money do not actually have a vehicle with keys locked inside, deputies said.

“Fortunately a victim did come forward and they were able to charge him, SAID Casey Hicks with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office.

“We’re hearing that he’s been around town and different areas doing the same thing and so we’re asking that if anyone out there that recognizes him and that maybe was taken advantage of by him contact the sheriff’s office at 389-5000.”

On Wednesday night, a woman reported she was approached by Gerald Rester, 28, of Baton Rouge outside of Chimes Restaurant on Coursey Boulevard. She says Rester asked her for money to pay Pop-A-Lock to get the keys out of his vehicle. The woman says she gave Rester $20. However, according to the police report, she “later learned it was a scam and found out he has done this in the past and has asked numerous people for money for the same thing.”

A deputy working extra-duty at Chimes went outside, spotted Rester, and told him to stop. “After being advised to stop, the subject fled on foot running down Coursey Boulevard,” the police report says. “It should be noted that there have been numerous reports of this subject using the same scam in Baton Rouge over the last few weeks,” the deputy wrote in his report.

Paul Sewall owns the Pop-A-Lock locations here in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area. Sewall says his company is often used by people to perpetrate scams and schemes.

“We’re a nationwide name,” Sewall said.

Louisiana residents missing out on $250M in tax rebates

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — If you own a home or any other type of property, odds are, there’s unclaimed money waiting for you.

More than $250 million is available through the state’s “citizens assessment” program.

It offers rebates and tax credits to anyone whose insurance rates went up after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Nearly $200 million has already gone back to the state’s general fund, because people didn’t claim money that was owed to them from 2006-2008.

But more than two-thirds of the cash in the system is still there.
