A senior at Alexandria Senior High’s efforts in community service earned her a free trip to Seattle.
What started as a senior project for Kaitlyn Graff, 17, turned into a successful 5K fun run that benefited Free Wheelchair Mission.
Graff said she picked the organization to benefit from her senior project after watching a video on the charity’s website. Free Wheelchair Mission provides wheelchairs to those who cannot afford them in developing countries.
A senior project is required to graduate and must include a problem and a solution, Graff said.
“The problem is they can’t walk,” Graff said. “The solution — give them wheelchairs.”
The “how” was where the 5K came in.

Alexandria, La – The Civil War, specifically the Red River Campaign, is an important part of the history of the Alexandria/Pineville area. Being a farming community, the cash crop, cotton, was in high demand. The locals wanted to protect themselves, and what was left of the land and crops, from a second Union attack, after the first attack left Alexandria burning. So began the construction of Fort Randolph and Fort Buhlow on the Pineville side of the Red River.
The Alexandria/Pineville area will remember the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with a series of events Thursday, March 7, 2013, through Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Deputies say they’ve uncovered a scam run by Justin Sterling and a non-inmate co-worker of Alexandria. Brandon Wilkes is accused of checking out Sterling on weekends for odd jobs, but instead, deputies say, no work was done and Wilkes collected money for the transportation.
On February 15th, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Work Release had an inmate walk off of a job sight of a private employer. 26-year-old Justin M. Sterling of Alexandria was employed as a day laborer and walked away from the job sight, but was later apprehended by RPSO and US Marshals Service on February 25th.
During the investigation, detectives uncovered a scam perpetrated by another person Sterling worked with, but did not involve the company.
24-year-old Brandon Wilkes of Alexandria and a civilian, worked with Sterling and would check Sterling out on the weekends as a drop-off laborer for odd jobs, allegedly for a fence company. However, Wilkes would drop Sterling off at other locations and then pick Sterling up later and return him to the Work Release Facility.
