Celebrations all over the world rang in the Chinese New Year this weekend, marking the Year of the Snake with fireworks, feasts and parades. The festivities mark the transition on the 12-year zodiac from the dragon to one of the world’s most despised animals. The National Post’s Armina Ligaya rounds up 5 things you need to know about the Year of the Snake.

1. Thoughtful but complex

Those born in the Year of the Snake are believed to be thoughtful, artistic and stylish yet complex characters, according to Chinese mythology. A sampling of people who have been born during this lunar year include: Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain; country-pop music singer Taylor Swift; Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe; media mega-mogul Oprah; Syrian president Bashar al-Assad; and the incoming Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
