Shreveport, LA: Sailor sentenced to life for child porn

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A federal judge in Shreveport, Louisiana has handed down a life sentence to a Fort Bliss Sailor for his part in a global online network of child porn.

Two others, Jonathan Mayor from Newport, Tennessee, and Micah turner from Roy, Utah were sentenced to 17 1/2 years. Their sentences are the result of a federal investigation that started in the Ark-La-Tex in 2009.

The investigation was called Operation Delego and it targeted 72 Dreamboard members from fourteen countries including the U.S.

Prosecutors describe Dreamboard as a once highly managed website- based community dedicated to the sexual abuse of children and the creation and dissemination of graphic images and videos of child sexual abuse throughout the world.

According to prosecutors Cuff was an active participant in the international criminal. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that 49-year-old Robert Cuff, a command master chief in the U.S. Navy stationed at Fort Bliss not only participated in child exploitation, but that he also engaged in a pattern of activity involving the sexual exploitation of a five year old child.

U.S. Attorney, Stephanie Finley stated “We agree with the court’s statement that this defendant was much like a Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde; to those who knew him in the military, he appeared to be an outstanding soldier but as the judge stated: this defendant had a dark side involving the advertising of child pornography and the rape of a young child.”

Lafayette, LA: Lavergne indicted on two counts of first-degree murder, one involving missing cyclist Michaela “Mickey” Shunick and the other the death of Lisa Pate

Brandon Scott Lavergne

LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette Parish grand jury indicted Brandon Scott Lavergne on Wednesday on two counts of first-degree murder, one involving missing cyclist Michaela “Mickey” Shunick and the other the death of Lisa Pate on July 3, 1999.

The grand jury met all day Wednesday to consider two cases, the last of which involved Lavergne. The grand jury returned the indictments shortly before 6 p.m.

Lavergne, 33, of the Lawtell area in St. Landry Parish, has been held without bail at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center in the disappearance of Shunick, a University of Louisiana at Lafayette student, since his July 5 arrest on counts of first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.

Little information was available Wednesday evening concerning Pate’s killing. Prosecutors declined to comment after the grand jury proceedings, and 15th Judicial District Attorney Michael Harson did not return a call to his cellphone.

News reports at the time about Pate’s slaying indicate that the 35-year-old Lafayette woman’s remains were found in September 1999 under some boards behind a house near Church Point. She had been missing since June of that year.

Baton Rouge teen among wounded in theater shooting

Bonnie Kate Pourciau

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A Baton Rouge teenager is among those shot in Friday morning’s mass shooting inside a Colorado movie theater.

Family friends say Bonnie Kate Pourciau, 18, was shot in the knee and survived.  She underwent several hours of surgery Friday.   Family members say Pourciau’s surgery went well and she was “in good spirits”.

Pourciau was in Colorado on a girl’s trip vacationing before starting college next month.

Elizabeth Sumrall, who is also from the Baton Rouge area, was also in the theater. Family members said she and Pourciau are friends. Sumrall was not injured in the shooting.

Sumrall posted a message on Facebook Thursday night before the shooting happened.

“Going to see The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado with Bonnie Kate Pourciau,” it read.

A family friend said the girls first sat on the front row of the theater, but moved to the back of the theater just before the movie started.

Pourciau underwent surgery for her injuries. Her parents were en route to Colorado to be with her, a family friend said.

The victim’s mother, Kathleen Pourciau, wrote on her Facebook wall about the incident just before 7 a.m.

“Bonnie Kate was shot last night in her leg in a theater in Aurora, Colorado,” she wrote. “She is at the hospital now in Denver and will be going into surgery soon. Many people were killed. Please pray for her and the others who were hurt and their families.”

The family of Pourciau released the following statement:

“We wish to thank our many family and friends as well as many others from the community for their expressions of support and concern for our daughter, as well as the many prayers that have been, and continue to be made on Bonnie Kate’s behalf. Her injuries, while serious, are not life-threatening, and the early indicators from her surgery have been encouraging. We would appreciate, as much as possible, being given the time and space to deal with the trauma of what has happened and would ask that people please respect our need for privacy. As a Christian family we  are trusting the Lord to guide us through this difficult time. Our hearts and prayers also go out to all the families and communities that are affected by this tragedy.”
