Battle of Bunker Hill

The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker’s Hill, June 17,1775 – John Trumbull

The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on June 17, 1775, mostly on and around Breed’s Hill, during the Siege of Boston early in the American Revolutionary War. The battle is named after the adjacent Bunker Hill, which was peripherally involved in the battle and was the original objective of both colonial and British troops, and is occasionally referred to as the “Battle of Breed’s Hill.”

On June 13, 1775, the leaders of the colonial forces besieging Boston learned that the British generals were planning to send troops out from the city to occupy the unoccupied hills surrounding the city. In response to this intelligence, 1,200 colonial troops under the command of William Prescottstealthily occupied Bunker Hill and Breed’s Hill, constructed an earthen redoubt on Breed’s Hill, and built lightly fortified lines across most of the Charlestown Peninsula.

When the British were alerted to the presence of the new position the next day, they mounted an attack against them. After two assaults on the colonial lines were repulsed with significant British casualties, the British finally captured the positions on the third assault, after the defenders in the redoubt ran out of ammunition. The colonial forces retreated to Cambridge over Bunker Hill, suffering their most significant losses on Bunker Hill.

While the result was a victory for the British, they suffered heavy losses: over 800 wounded and 226 killed, including a notably large number of officers. The battle is seen as an example of a Pyrrhic victory, because the immediate gain (the capture of Bunker Hill) was modest and did not significantly change the state of the siege, while the cost (the loss of nearly a third of the deployed forces) was high. Meanwhile, colonial forces were able to retreat and regroup in good order having suffered few casualties. Furthermore, the battle demonstrated that relatively inexperienced colonial forces were willing and able to stand up to regular army troops in a pitched battle.

Bogalusa, LA – National Guardsmen service rejection story most likely not true…

The impact of social media was evident in Bogalusa after a message posted on Facebook prompted rapid and widespread calls for the boycott of a local store, and a small group of people assembled outside the establishment waving American flags and telling their story to passers-by.

Inside, Savi, the East Indian owner of SP Truck Stop, the former Duval’s located across LouisianaHighway 10 from the American Legion Home, was upset and confused.

The Facebook message was a forward from a woman who sent a mobile phone message claiming that her husband was in line at the store and heard a uniformed member of the National Guard told “We don’t serve your kind.”

Savi said she has never refused to serve anyone unless they did not have proper identification for a controlled item.

She said she believes that the person who thought he heard the refusal of service must have heard wrong. For example, maybe the military man asked for a brand of cigarette and was told, “We don’t sell that kind here,” and was upset that he would have to make another stop.

All-American Kirk Triplett, who walked in to make a purchase, said he was a “regular” and verified what Savi said.

“They’ll take anybody’s money,” he said, laughing. “They’re nice to everybody here.”

The Daily News reported in a subsequent article that efforts to locate the National Guardsman who had allegedly been denied service at SP Truck Stop had so far proved fruitless:

The original video has been deleted many times on YouTube because the man filming  the video uses terms like “ragheads”.   I don’t agree with them pulling the video down but that is for another discussion – if anything it should be left up as an example of  foolish reporting of an event based on emotion.  I don’t like the way the man talks about people he obviously knows nothing about except someone claimed that a National Guardsmen was refused service.  He has the right to be stupid and film himself making stupid claims.  He clearly doesn’t know they are from India, and most likely not Muslim.   The man who made the video is not the Guardsmen, it is not video of the alleged event either.  It is just video of the people protesting outside the store, and the cameraman’s comments.

A Texaco station I would imagine has video surveillance, maybe not with audio – but anyhoo.

“People are quick to jump on something like this,” David Carpenter said. “Anything anti-American, anti-military, they just jump on it and they lash out so crazy… and we’ve got police officers all out here now, and these people, they can barely run their business.”

Greetings y'all!  It seems ages since I checked in - and I suppose it is.  Anyway, I have been tasked with writing a piece for the local newspaper and decided that I'd share it here:

Many years ago, in another life, I worked in a theatre Box Office.  During my time there I met some very well-known, (dare I say it?), famous creative people.

There are many characteristics that make up a good man. Beating women is not one of them. Alleged man, heal thyself.

"Team Breezy" needs to learn this lesson as well.

Oh, yes. Being against the beating of women is totally racist.
