Shreveport: Springlake Mom Develops Educational iPhone App – Simple Learning 123

Springlake resident and stay-at-home mom Angela Vinet had an epiphany one day while folding laundry.”I realized I needed something for my children to do while I folded socks. My son was at the age where he needed to learn to count and I figured why not try to come up with an educational app for iPads and iPhones,” said Vinet, a former middle school teacher at St. Mark’s Cathedral. “I was really confident that I could do it.”

Louisiana Guest Workers Walk Out of Crawfish Plant

The food that reaches our tables travels an intricate network of farms, processing plants, warehouses, stores, and restaurants. It also travels a labyrinth of abusive employers, low-paying jobs, and general disregard for the workers and the food, according to the Food Chain Workers Alliance, which released an extensive report at a conference in New York yesterday.

As the food workers exchanged ideas on building power to raise wages and stop discrimination, a group of Mexican guest workers at a seafood processor in Louisiana walked off the job, driven to the wall by just the kinds of conditions detailed in the report.

Workers who peel crawfish for C.J.’s Seafood in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, confronted their boss on Monday after weeks of abuse and mistreatment, said Jacob Horowitz of the National Guestworker Alliance (NGA). They were forced to work shifts of up to 24 hours and threatened with shovels, the Alliance said.

About 40 workers came to the U.S. to work for C.J.’s under H-2B guest worker visas, which typically last nine months. But supervisors didn’t let workers take breaks, and they were cheated out of overtime pay, said Ana Diaz, one of the workers.

“When we wanted to take breaks the supervisor threatened to hit us,” Diaz said through a translator. “When one of our co-workers called the police because she couldn’t take the treatment, then our boss threatened to hurt our families.”

Workers called 911 when, to prevent them from going outside to take breaks, supervisors “locked us in the plant by blocking the door with boxes,” said Diaz.

After a sheriff’s deputy showed up and then left, the general manager, Michael Leblanc, called the workforce together, according to Stephen Boykewich of NGA. Leblanc told them he knew they were trying to contact law enforcement, and that some were trying to contact lawyers. He said he had lots of contacts in Mexico, both “good people and bad people.” Boykewich said he told the workers, “I know where you all live.”

“The workers have seen this guy in Mexico, and they didn’t think it was an idle threat,” Boykewich said.

Despite the threats, eight workers walked off their shift on Monday and went back to Leblanc with a set of demands, including paying their unpaid wages and taking back the threat to their families. The manager refused to accept their demands, and recant the threats.

The eight didn’t return to work. Instead they held a planning meeting in nearby New Orleans and the next day protested outside Sam’s Club, a Walmart subsidiary that buys 85 percent of C.J.’s crawfish. They also filed complaints with the Department of Labor. Thirty workers continue to work at the plant.

KALB of Alexandria pulled off Dish Network in dispute

Attention Dish Network customers:

Dish Network’s agreement with KALB-TV, your local NBC/CBS affiliate will expire on June 6, 2012.

We were unable to come to terms on a fair deal, and the offer presented from Dish Network was far lower than what we have received from most every other system we have a deal with.  It is our desire to continue to negotiate to reach a settlement and get KALB-TV back on the system.

The current situation:

* Negotiations with Dish Network have been ongoing for many weeks. Both sides have negotiated in good faith towards a new agreement. Although we are currently at an impasse, we remain optimistic that we will reach a new deal for carriage of KALB-TV-NBC/CBS on Dish.

Dish Network’s final offer to KALB-TV remains significantly below what most other cable systems have agreed to pay us in our television market.

We understand your frustration and appreciate your patience and support. Please continue to tell Dish Network to negotiate a fair deal with KALB-TV-NBC/CBS on their system.  Call Dish Network at 1-888-926-5457 to register your concerns.

* Remember, other cable and satellite operators continue to provide KALB-TV-NBC/CBS, including Suddenlink Communications and DirecTV.  And we are always available free over the air with an antenna.

Hoak Media Corp. and national satellite television provider Dish Network are in a dispute that has pulled the plug on KALB-TV and NALB-TV broadcasts to more than 20,000 Dish subscribers in Central Louisiana.

Dish is framing the dispute as a conflict over the company’s AutoHop feature on remote controls that allows viewers to skip commercials on recorded programs with the push of a button.

Dish said in a news release that Hoak Media, which owns KALB, NALB and other stations in seven states, is demanding a 200 percent increase in charges to air Hoak broadcasts because of a dispute over the AutoHop feature. Dish spokeswoman Danielle Johnson did not immediately return a message seeking comment Friday afternoon.

“Amid transmission negotiations, Hoak blocked Dish’s ability to transmit KALB and NALB’s content,” Dish said in the release. Dish also told The Wall Street Journal this week that Dallas-based Hoak pulled the signal.

Rich Adams, Hoak Media’s chief operating officer, disputed Dish’s claims.

Ghosties in Crowley Landmarks?

The Advertiser is given a tour Friday of Crowley City Hall. The building--formerly Crowley Motor Co.--also houses a Ford automotive and J.D. Miller Music museum. Ghost hunters will visit City Hall and the Rice Theater Saturday night to search for paranormal activity.<br />

CROWLEY - After June 16, those watching a show at Crowley’s Historic Rice Theatre or visiting City Hall may be a bit more curious as to each building’s history or the people who have previously performed in or occupied them. That’s because a group called Louisiana Spirits will be spending that Saturday night at each building testing for paranormal activity. In short, they will be checking to see if either place is haunted.

“We will be in both places that Saturday doing an investigation,” said Elissa Lehnardt who works with the group. “It should be great fun.”

According to Lehnardt, neither place as far as she knows has a reputation for being haunted. However, due to the age of both buildings and their histories both are considered very promising places where ghosts would reside.

“I personally haven’t heard anything about activity in either place but any place where something emotional has happened or where music is part of a building’s history is where most of the activity we encounter takes place,” she said. “For example, prisons and hospitals are very emotional places and we’ve found plenty of activity there.”

While the Rice Theatre is obviously an old building where plenty of music has been played, some people may not realize that Crowley’s City Hall building was formerly the music studio of renowned local music producer J.D. Miller.
