Habitual offender measure advances to Senate

The Louisiana House overwhelmingly agreed Thursday that habitual offenders should be given the opportunity to be released from prison.

State Rep. Patricia Smith, D-Baton Rouge, said House Bill 543 would create hope for inmates serving life sentences for what she characterized as “victimless” offenses, such as repeated drug or theft charges. Her bill would not apply to violent criminals or sex offenders.

“This is not being soft on crime. This is actually being smart on crime,” Smith said.

The House voted 86-7 in favor of advancing the legislation to the Senate.

Sen. Landrieu backs anti-Kony effort

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and some of her colleagues joined Thursday in the “Kony 2012” with the release of a new online video seeking action against Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.

The effort led by Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., Landrieu and others is a response to the huge viral video success of the “Kony 2012” campaign that has received hundreds of millions of online views worldwide, mostly by young people.

The nearly 8-minute video was released ahead of Friday’s Kony 2012 global day of action and awareness

Calling Kony, who heads the Lord’s Resistance Army, “the world’s leading and most wanted war criminal,” Landrieu said he must be stopped after 25 years of terrorism in killing and mutilating innocent people and children.

“This is more than just capturing Joe Kony,” Landrieu said Thursday. “This is about telling the young people in America that your voices are heard.”

Columbus ship replicas dock in Lake Charles

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

If you drive by the Lake today, you may notice two ships docked. The Nina and The Pinta, replicas of two of Christopher Columbus’s fleet of ships in 1492.
The ships sailed into port for their official arrival Thursday morning April 19.
“It was all done by hand tools, the same way it would have been built 500 years ago,” Captain of The Nina Kyle Friauf said about how the ship was built. The Pinta on the other hand was built using a bit more modern methods, but still a very good replica. The Pinta is also 10 to 12 feet larger than the original.
Friauf has been the captain of The Nina for 6 years, starting his journey as a crewmember.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get an understanding for the type of difficulties and things they had to do to cross and discover a new world back and forth between the continents 500 years ago,” Friauf said.
Both ships are traveling museums sailing port to port and together both ships have sailed more than one million miles around North America.

William Jefferson settles in to federal prison in Beaumont, Texas

Former Democratic Rep. William Jefferson reported Friday to the low-security federal prison in Beaumont, Texas, to begin serving a 13-year sentence, the longest ever for a congressional member. Jefferson, 65, arrived about 40 minutes ahead of the noon deadline set by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III who presided over Jefferson’s 2009 trial for corruption and bribery.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Former Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, must report to prison by May 4 to to begin serving his 13-year sentence on bribery and public corruption charges, a judge ordered today, revoking his $50,000 bail.

Judge T.S. Ellis, who sentenced Jefferson to after his 2009 corruption conviction said he was setting the specific date for Jefferson to report, rather than leaving it up to the federal prison system, because of the length of time he has been allowed to remain free since his conviction.

Ellis has allowed Jefferson to remain free, under electronic monitor, while his appeals process moved forward.

The 13-year-sentence Ellis gave Jefferson, now 65, was the longest ever in a corruption case for a member of Congress, but less than half of what prosecutors had sought.

Well at least it was a speedy trial…

Suspecting Jefferson of bribery, the FBI raided his Congressional offices in May 2006, but he was re-elected later that year. On June 4, 2007, a federal grand jury indicted Jefferson on sixteen felony charges related to corruption.
